We’re stoked to share and explain some really nice updates to the DECK itself from Bustin Boards. Since before the X+ upgrade was announced, we’ve been working with Bustin to modify the deck to fit the larger 3P10S Samsung 30Q pack. This pack is significantly larger than our original 2P10S pack (still used in the Hybrid-S and Hybrid-E models), and it DID NOT fit in our original case design.
To accommodate the larger battery, we needed to create a cavity in the board and redesign the case a bit (details below). Bustin Boards accepted the challenge graciously and has created a board that is truly a masterpiece by any standards. The new hollow-core edition is built unlike any skateboard we’ve seen, with layers CNC-milled individually and then pressed together use a cassete-style mold that hollows out the wood core, while STILL managing to weave and wrap the fiberglass through every layer. Through this process they have managed to hollow-out most of the boards central core WITHOUT adding to the thickness or taking away from the stiffness or strength.
While we were under the hood with Bustin Boards, we also headed some advice we got during the campaign. Several of you have asked if the case of the board would fit a larger 4P10S battery pack. Although originally this was not an option, we are now stoked to announce that it is indeed through the new board/case design. For now, we DO NOT plan to sell a 4P10S battery in the near future, but we may do so down the line if enough people want it. For now, however, this option is only worth mentioning for those who build their own rigs and know the process. Naturally, any tampering/swapping/removing of the battery does void our standard warranty so don’t go poking around in there if you’re a novice. It is worth noting here that the extra space in the case is a still very GOOD thing overall for any size battery, even with a 3P10S or 2P10S battery. Having a little extra space in the case allowed us to leave more room between components which helps with cooling.
Along with the new hollow-core construction, the deck also now uses high-performance threaded inserts to mount the case AND an inset channel that allows the case to mount INTO the deck rather than floating on top. Not only does this make the case more resistant to water/dirt, it strengthens the overall rig with the case and board becoming an inter-locking unit and not just a plastic box screwed to a skateboard. It also allowed us to improve the wire-management with a slick little entry-way that passed through the drop and into the hollow-core/case cavity. Per some of your comments about the loose wires, we also added a nifty little wire routing piece which keeps the wires snug against the board at all times.
Last but not least on the deck updates, we’ve made a small design change by adding the colored glass to BOTH sides of the board. Originally we just did colored glass on the bottom, but we felt like adding to the top made the overall design somewhat more consistent and significantly more sexy :)
We can’t say enough that all of these amazing design upgrades were made possible by our friends at Bustin who worked hand-in-hand with us on the larger battery case redesign. Together we agreed that the challenge of a larger battery was a chance for us to massively improve the board as a whole.
As we mentioned, the new case design was inspired (or rather required) by the X+ upgrade and the move to a larger, more powerful circuit board and battery pack. And while the case does have slightly larger footprint on the board, it is actually a lower-profile than the original due to Bustin’s hollow-core design on the deck. By tucking a portion of the battery height up into the board, we could disperse the volume out and bring the case up close to the bottom of the board.
We also took the opportunity to clean up the visual aesthetic and structural integrity of the case, giving a cleaner overall look which follows the natural lines of the Bustin Sportster deck. We routed the motor wires through a channel in the board which passes through the internal parts of the case. Last but least, we added significant structural reinforcement to the case to make sure it can take a beating.
Overall, the new case design represents a huge improvement. Not only does it allow the board to fit larger battery packs (up to a 4P10S 16850 pack), but it also increased ground clearance, improve strength and gave the board a sexier, cleaner, more professional look overall.
Thats it for now! We appreciate ALL of your support and understanding as we produce and deliver you the best e-board on the market!
